We’ve learned to accept that an anti-virus subscription is necessary when owning a computer. Some of us have used free anti-virus software and quickly found that these are often worse than having a virus, with all the upselling, advertising, and even 3rd party ads. Only to find our way back to a paid subscription. Even email scammers know, and have exploited the fact that most of us use paid subscription vendors.
The major companies, at their core, provide a good product in their anti-virus software. However, they feel the need to have 6+ different price points for “added protection”, etc. This leads to this analogy: We can all agree that it is dangerous to drive around Clarksville. However, few, if any of us, wear a helmet, HANS device, fire suit, heck, most of us don’t even have a roll cage in our vehicles. Why not? It would be safer, wouldn’t it? Absolutely! But we’ve evaluated the risk and have accepted the level of safety that the manufacturers included with our vehicle, and we try our best to drive safely. With that said, why not use Windows Defender?
Windows Defender is preinstalled and is equally effective as the paid basic protection versions. Windows Defender automatically updates with your Windows Updates, and no need to worry about billing or being overwhelmed with add-on sales advertisements. This tech guy recommends using the preinstalled equipment for basic protection and doing our best to “drive safely” on the internet.
